General Work Experience with Animals

General Work Experience with Animals

Why General Work Experience with Animals Matters

If you know you want to work with animals but have not yet settled on a particular species or role, general experience is a sensible starting point. It gives you a chance to test different environments, discover your preferences and build practical skills before committing to a specific career path.

Hands-on experience not only helps you discover what you enjoy but also builds your confidence around animals and demonstrates to future employers your commitment to the field. Many animal jobs are competitive, and candidates with relevant experience will usually stand out.

Working with animals also teaches teamwork, time management and the ability to stay calm under pressure. These transferable skills are valued across the sector, whether you end up in veterinary nursing, conservation, animal welfare or something else entirely.

Where to Find Opportunities

Domestic pets are often the easiest route into general animal experience because pet businesses are widespread across the UK. Consider approaching kennels, catteries, grooming salons, pet shops or veterinary practices. Many will offer work experience placements, volunteer roles or entry-level paid positions to people who show genuine enthusiasm and a willingness to learn.

Animal charities and rescue centres are another good option. Organisations such as the RSPCA, Cats Protection, Dogs Trust and smaller local rescues frequently rely on volunteers. Tasks might include cleaning, feeding, socialising animals or helping with adoption events. These roles give you broad exposure to animal care and welfare issues.

If you are still at school or college, ask about structured work experience placements. Many schools arrange designated work experience periods in Year 10 or 11, and some colleges have established partnerships with local animal businesses. For those who have left education, contacting places directly with a polite enquiry often works well. Be prepared for unpaid work initially, particularly in the charity sector.

Farms, riding stables and wildlife centres can also provide valuable experience, though these may require more specialist interest. If you are unsure which direction suits you, starting with a general pet role allows you to explore before narrowing your focus.

Your situation may be slightly different. ask a question below ↓ and our editorial team will reply with our advice.

What You Will Learn

At the most basic level, animals need food, fresh water and appropriate shelter. But proper care goes well beyond these essentials. Over time, you will learn that animals also require mental stimulation, social interaction, routine health checks and environments suited to their natural behaviour.

Good animal welfare means understanding body language and behaviour. A relaxed, well cared for animal looks and acts differently from one that is stressed, frightened or unwell. Learning to spot these signs takes time and observation, and practical experience is the best teacher.

You will also learn about hygiene and disease prevention, safe handling techniques, feeding schedules and record keeping. In busier settings like veterinary practices or rescue centres, you may gain exposure to more advanced topics such as administering medication, assisting with treatments or supporting animals through recovery.

Health and safety awareness is equally important. You should understand basic risk assessment and follow safety protocols to protect yourself, colleagues and the animals in your care. This includes knowing how to handle animals safely, recognising hazards and using protective equipment when required.

Do not underestimate the less glamorous side of animal work. Cleaning, mucking out, laundry and general maintenance make up a large part of most roles. Employers want to see that you can handle these tasks reliably and without complaint.

Making the Most of Your Experience

Ensure you approach any placement or volunteer role with a professional attitude by arriving punctually, dressing suitably, following instructions and asking questions when needed. Showing reliability and a positive attitude matters as much as your practical skills, especially when you are starting out.

Keep a record of what you do and learn. Note down specific tasks, species you have worked with and any training you complete. This information will be useful when updating your CV or filling in job applications later on.

Building connections within the animal care community can open doors to further opportunities. Talk to experienced staff, ask for advice on career progression and stay in touch with contacts who might provide references or alert you to vacancies.

If you are volunteering, be realistic about what you can commit to. Most organisations prefer regular, dependable help over occasional appearances. Even a few hours each week, given consistently, will build your experience and strengthen your references.

Once you have some general experience, you will be better placed to decide whether to pursue formal qualifications, apply for paid roles or specialise in a particular area. City and Guilds, BTEC and degree courses in animal care, veterinary nursing and related subjects are widely available across the UK. Many of these courses include practical placements, which provide supervised experience alongside your studies. Entry requirements vary, so check with individual providers. Note that some roles, particularly in veterinary settings, may require specific qualifications before you can progress beyond basic duties.

General work experience with animals is not a shortcut, but it is a practical first step. It helps you understand what the work involves, confirms whether the sector suits you and builds the foundation for whatever comes next.

@S At 14 you'll struggle to find paid animal work, as most kennels, catteries and stables won't take anyone under 16 for insurance reasons. Your best bet is to ring round local stables offering to muck out in exchange for riding time, or ask a small animal rescue if they need volunteer help at weekends. Some city farms also take younger helpers if a parent signs a consent form. Pop in face to face rather than emailing, you'll get a much better response.

CareerWithAnimals Editor 19/03/2018 at 3:42 pm
Unfortunately, you may find this with many organisations due to insurance reasons. You may be able to gain work experience through your parents if they are willing to volunteer and bring you with them. The likes of the National Trust may be helpful here here .

Hello, I am 16 years old and I'm looking for work experience. I used to have pets but have no overall experience. I haven't decided what I would like to do in the future yet but I want to experience how working with animals feels like since I genuinely love them. This would certanly help me decide my future career. I am available in any holidays and wouldn't mind working full time cleaning (any type of) animals, their habitat or observing small surgeries.

I am 14 yrs old and I am interested in getting work experience with animals. Most people tell me that because of my age that I might as well wait until I am 16 before I look at it. If people do say I can look at experience I have to do it through school. I love animals and I find I understand them well so I would love to work towards a career with them. I don't live on a farm or anything like that (I would if I could) I just have my dog who is 10yrs old. I want to improve my CV to improve my chances in the future. I would be grateful for any advice you can give me.

I am currently studying a Animal care(level 2) at St. Helens college and I am looking for working experience with animals. My course consists of taking on a work placement which should be 1500 hours and must take place on Thursdays, which is a given day for work experience. I would also have time on weekends. I am finding it hard to find any work experience and to become very successful in my future I will need work experience, I am hoping to become a zookeeper once I have finished college. I have had hamsters, fish and a rabbit in the past and I currently have 2 rabbits. The main reason for my comment is I need to find some work experience and was wondering if anyone knows of any locations that will allow a 16 year old to do work experience. I am from Skelmersdale, so I would be interested in places close such as Wigan or Ormskirk. I am also interested in trying to care for bigger animals as I am used to handling small animals. I would be ever so thankful if you have any suggestions, so I look forward to hearing from you, thank you. Alisha
